Home Business Myths

This page on home business myths is a rather negative sounding section, so a little positive balance may be in order.

I believe the best home businesses have the potential to offer a greater selection of people, a chance to improve their lives, for less money, than at any other point in human history.

However this potential is not usually fulfilled for various reasons, some of which are described below.

In A Nutshell
  • Home business success can be bought - success hinges on transforming a talented amateur into a professional
  • It is easy - nothing could be further from the truth, but it is achievable
  • It can be done for free - it is going to cost either in direct costs or time
  • Anyone can copy an expert and be successful – Untrue each persons' character has a major if not deciding factor on each business category
  • It is quick – As mentioned before it is a case of becoming proficient, for a talented person, if you are a bad match no amount of time or money will help
  • You need money to make money – Some businesses do require specific amounts, but money without a good match and talent is just going to be wasted

Many home business myths or misconceptions arise not just from those buying... but from those selling... and for a reason.

Buyers, according to temperament type, want specific things from a home business... sellers know this and tell them what they want to hear.

Myths have often prevented people from developing or getting help.

Take the extreme view of the Inquisition and the European dark ages. The view that every aspect of life was due to such and such... created a bunch of bizarre remedies... all of which we in this enlightened time know to be ridiculous.

At the time however these were considered to be correct, and of course never helped the individual.

The same holds true now, until the home business myths are dispelled many prospective entrepreneurs will remain in the financial dark ages.

The sellers do not want the home business myths dispelled because they make a handsome profit by perpetuating or encouraging them.

More Common Home Business Myths:

1. “Oh I Tried That, It Doesn’t Work”

Usually incorrect, they didn’t work it. The alternative is very, very difficult to accept, that the answer could be to do with them making mistakes, or just their lack of knowledge, insufficient skill level or bad temperament match.

2. Belief That What Is Being Sold Exists

This is perhaps the biggest home business myth... there are no secrets, formulas or systems that can be simply copied by a novice or untalented person. There are methods, tactics and strategies which are better and used successfully by professionals.

3. “I Don’t Have Enough Money”

Incorrect, a person with plenty of money and insufficient ability will end up with experience and no money. £10,000 ($18,000) capital without the necessary skill and best-fit opportunity will just be lost.

If this guide is used properly, anyone in the Developed World can afford to start a good home business.

4. “I Don’t Have Enough Time”

Incorrect, unless they change what they do they will never have more time... they and a billionaire have the same 24 hours in a day.

Entrepreneurs find time to do anything, non-entrepreneurs always seem too busy.

That being said different strategies require different amounts of time to be put together and run. You can assess which is more suited to your situation.

All home businesses should be started part-time. This allows for skill development, the learning curve and removing the pressure of a new business having to pay the bills.

5. "I Don’t Want To Spend Any Money"

This is a totally understandable position especially as most people looking at home businesses do so from financial pressure, also as we know 98% of people who do spend any money, just lose it.

Forget the ‘home’ or ‘opportunity’ side of things and just call it a business, how many businesses require no start up capital?

Not many.

We are not talking in tens of thousands of pounds... if you check some franchises you will find there are wheelie-bin cleaning and condom vending franchises that will cost you £5-10,000 ($9-18,000) to have the privilege of cleaning other people’s bins or spending too much time in public toilets!

Perhaps the best selling point of the home business concept is the relatively low start-up costs.

Although the headline is a reasonable viewpoint it is not really that of a businessperson.

I would recommend investing a little on a system or structure that helps overcome temperament and character weaknesses... this is real value-for-money.
