This is a brief background on the home business consultant website and its author. To understand the motives and reasons for this project we need to go back to 2001.

In that summer, I had a very comfortable existence – happily married, managing director, spectacular house, house staff, polo twice a week, 2 kids in boarding school etc.

Then 9/11 came. As well as the obvious devastation, this infamy also stopped tourism in Africa overnight. This happened at the same time as a major expansion in our business. In less than 6 months my family was back living with my parents and I was on the Job Seekers Allowance – The UK Government support. The kids were taken out of school and went downhill, my marriage was severely strained and I went into a relentless depression.

Two things got me out of that depression – running across Dartmoor and a chance discovery, serendipity, of the world of business opportunities or home business.

It was not an immediate financial success at all, yet it gave me hope. It started me on a path to recovery, and for that alone I will always be thankful.

But this is NOT a rags-to-riches story.

The home business industry seemed to offer a way back up. Yet for 3 long years, all that happened was more and more money was lost. I tried everything that came along, but nothing worked.

As many of you will be able to relate, when you are down and out, even a little start-up money seems a lot. I am pretty pig-headed and would gamble two weeks of food allowance on a new venture – making my family survive just on bread and sweet tea for 14 days – and still not make anything. Mr Popularity!

I was always convinced that the lack of funds was my problem. It made sense that this would also be the case for thousands of other people in similar situations.

So one day I decided that a good business idea would be to test all the opportunities on offer and write up the results for other people to benefit from. In this process there would be two income streams: 1) the businesses that worked, and, 2) the sale of the information.

Of course to do this you need a serious amount of capital and time.

I had none.

But with that concept I began to look at all and every way of achieving this aim. Then by a fortunate chance – serendipity again – an unexpected windfall came my way.

However the windfall should have been for a secure investment. Being a high risk/reward type of person I decided to gamble. Lose and it would mean bankruptcy, no home, and probably no family. Would you gamble your house on nothing more than an idea?

18 months after the initial idea I had over $400,000 in my bank account. It's funny but it didn’t feel any different, just a lot more figures in front of the decimal point.

3 years later on... and I am experienced, very experienced.

I do not pretend to be the greatest entrepreneur, or have discovered any particular secret that will make you a fortune or to have the elixir of wealth that so many other people promise. But I would say I have put in the time, effort and expense to qualify me as something of an expert of this industry.

I learnt from every cent spent, every mile driven and every action taken. We all know the expression 'if only I knew then what I know now' this site is a way for you to be in that position before you start.

This site is designed with two purposes in mind. These are the same reasons as the initial business idea:

1.) To make money for myself - Oh how selfish! Come on, why else would I bother to put this site together? The authors of every site, ezine, blog etc that you read, want to make money from their viewers.

However and this is critically important, I could recommend anything - my unique selling point of money spent - is pretty strong and not easily copied. Yet the very, very FEW options I do recommend are not the most expensive, but actually amongst the cheapest.

2.) The second reason, and the one that will be of most value to you, is that I can help you avoid the landmines that saturate this battlefield. The home business consultant site can show you the shortcuts, the safe paths and better options. And beside the digital campfire, hopefully relate some of the expensive, embarrassing, and stupid anecdotes that may make your journey an awful lot less painful and expensive than mine.
